Dr. Pietro De Matteis is the Lead for Engagements and Policy Officer within the Indo-Pacific section of the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). His core tasks include developing the policy and fosters collaboration with officials and civil society stakeholders from the Indo- Pacific region, including think tanks, academia, NGOs, to enhance the understanding of the Alliance and underpin the importance of international cooperation to maintain
peace and enhance our collective security He previously spent over 14 years working for the European Union, primarily at the European Commission and the European External Action Service (the EU’s diplomatic corps), serving in various roles: Advisor for Public Diplomacy, Deputy Commissioner General for the EU at EXPO2020 Dubai, Public Diplomacy attaché at the EU Delegation to Canada,
and Programme Manager for EU-funded initiatives in Europe, the Middle-East, Asia and North America as well as with the United Nations Headquarters in New York. An economist by training, Pietro holds a PhD in International Studies from the University of Cambridge and he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Milan-Bicocca after an Erasmus year at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. He also earned a Master’s degree from the European College of Parma and has been a visiting scholar at both Columbia University in New York and Renmin University in Beijing. Pietro also served as an elected City Councillor in Brussels (Saint-Gilles), working to bridge the European project with local communities and has actively supported European citizens’ engagement by leading various organizations (e.g. European Federalist Party, Stand Up for Europe, Alliance4Europe).
